Day 3: A Shocking Visit to the Countryside

Today has proven to be quite eventful. It started in the morning while I was riding Carp through the surrounding countryside around San Silibia. It is spring now for what that is worth, and the weather is quite pleasant. While traveling through a more wooded area, I was startled when I heard a loud scream as of a creature in great pain. It was nearby and I quickly dismounted Carp and proceeded to investigate.

As I came upon the source of the screaming I came across a truly horrific display. Five men had cornered a small figure that was the source of the screaming. I approached closer to get a better look and was taken aback by the sight. It was a young female beastolk, some sort of feline species, looking rather emaciated. She was dressed in simple clothes of hemp and sackcloth and was bloodied and dirty.

The men by contrast were well dressed in colorful hunting gear of fine leather and cloth, and were clearly of some form of nobility. They were armed with crossbows and knives and axes, and were approaching where the girl was huddled with clear intent to do harm.

I have encountered some beastfolk since arriving in San Silibia, and I knew of them from trips to larger trading towns, though we had none in my own small village of Cleihgan. Like those others I have seen, this one had a collar on her neck, and that signified her as property, presumably of one of these men.

I don't particularly care for slavery, though in my homelands it's quite common for prisoners to be taken in clan raids as trophies and put to work as domestic servants and the like. Also, while in a general sense I do believe that a man's property is his to do with as he pleases and I look down on things like theft, I do not like cruelty for it's own sake. The sight of a gang of men going after such a helpless victim filled me with disgust.

I acted quickly. While I was lacking my sword, having left it at the inn, I did have my hand axes and I pulled them from my belt while shouting an order for the men to stop what they were doing. I stand more than a full head and shoulders taller than most other men, owing to the giant's blood in my ancestry, so in spite of their larger numbers, I had hoped to intimidate them. That was not to be the case however, as after a brief exchange they attacked me.

They were unskilled and only two came at me at the bidding of one who looked to be their leader. I dispatched them quickly and then a third who was trying to ready a bow on me. The remaining two ran in fear. I then turned on the beastfolk girl, and while she was scared of me at first, I was able to calm her until I could get back to Carp, and then we returned to the inn I have been staying at.

The innkeeper, who just told me to call her Granny, berated me for getting blood on her floor, but after I agreed to scrub the floor for her, she helped me tend to the girl's wounds. The beastfolk girl was in a bad way, and the collar on her neck was far too tight. I removed it with my knife. I learned that her name is Rin. She explained that she was owned by the Sulaco family, a wealthy merchant family with a lot of influence in the city. Granny says that will be trouble, but thus far no one has come looking for me or the girl.
